I put Priscilla up in an empty apartment with a microphone, loop station, and her guitar. She’d invited some friends and a few fans from her show the night before to be a part of this private concert. Most of them came in pairs, talking about their favorite music and the last bad movie they’d seen. The rest of the fans were alone and stood quietly as Priscilla and I decided on the play list. Like some sort of instinct, she began playing for the crowd stuffed into the room as I set up the camera. She continued to sing as I turned the camera onto her, stepping out from the fringes.

The sun was going down so we opted for fewer windows. We crammed into the elevator and watched the buttons light up one by one. The crowd filed in to the breezy rooftop balcony, sitting on the oversized couches as I asked Priscilla what she thought about when she played onstage…

We took to the streets around Little Tokyo as darkness rolled in. The shopping district was buzzing with people walking and laughing and waving down the street to friends. Priscilla and I watched a man playing a Shamisen hoping to find some odd amalgam, but the sound was too discordant from her own. Only a few people seemed to notice Priscilla playing as we walked between the fluorescents lights and outdoor eateries. I stopped abruptly and asked her to sing an A cappella version of ‘The Moon’. After she began people started to gather behind the camera, drawn to her presence. A pair of security guards stood near us, deciding between each other if we were allowed to film. Maybe they once had dreams of being musicians themselves. On our way back to the apartment Priscilla was still singing, in her own harmonic world away from the all the other noises in the city. She sang her way right past us, as we stopped to cross the street.

I was lucky enough to see Priscilla at the Media Club in Vancouver last week, and it was such a great show. (Willoughby was super cool too.)
Priscilla, if you’re out there please come back soon! You’re destined for stardom. I can’t wait to see you play a nice big venue like the Commodore.

Just when I was beginning to think our generation had only mindless "music" to produce, Priscilla comes along with something refreshing and original. Her voice is so warm and her lyrics are real. It’s also intriguing to see a Korean American in this area (I’m also Korean American).
*sigh* her music is so soothing!!

As Craig Ferguson sagely observed, Priscilla and her work are simply "lovely." On reflection, however, that description is TOO simple. Her songs and performances reveal an artist who can be slyly satiric while maintaining a sensitive sincerity that is regularly reflected in her lyrics.
To be honest, more than anything I love the SOUND of her voice and am eager to hear her sing anything that she feels comfortable singing, whether they’re original compositions or covers.
I’d like to suggest, as I’m sure others have, that she release (via her website or other venues) hitherto uncollected /unrecorded works to the public. A year or so is too long to wait for official eps/albums by this wonderful performer. I’d especially enjoy entire club sets or full concerts, complete with song introductions and informal banter with the audience. Priscilla is as delightful speaking as she is while sharing her musical talent.
One final comment: Like another "one-man-band," Bob Dylan, Priscilla Ahn is unique in that SHE is the attraction and not just studio production slickness. (This, of course, is not to negate the excellent quality of the videos reproduced on this site) Listen to and watch, for example, most of the Youtube clips and we come to realize that any excerpts of her work are precious REGARDLESS of the technical deficiencies. As with numerous Dylan bootlegs throughout the years, we learn to ignore the tape hiss or digital dropouts and, instead, focus on the beauty and truth that lie at the heart of an unassuming but important musical artist.
