The Telegraph fait le portrait de Martin Mills, le fondateur de Beggars Banquet, devenu le gros géant de l’indé. A noter en particulier cette réflexion à propos de Terra Firma, le fonds de pension qui a racheté EMI et compte essayer d’y appliquer de nouvelles méthodes de management et de marketing

"It’s pretty interesting that [Teera Firma’s boss] said he doesn’t understand why people don’t market test music in the same way that they market test films, and then re-do the music accordingly. It’s because we are not trying to sell people what they want, we are trying to sell people what they don’t know that they want yet."

Faire de la musique avec les autres

On avait loupé ça à l’époque : Brooklyn Vegan raconte un concert expérimental et participatif mené par le groupe Lucky Dragons avec des enfants dans un musée new yorkais, autour du concept "Makes a baby"

"Fischbeck and Rara often perform in small gallery spaces, where they present the box to an audience by setting it on the floor. The touchers produce channels of feedback when touched, but here’s the catch : the audience has to touch each other as well. At least two people have to touch each other and touch a wire to trigger the first note. Lucky Dragons calls the concept "Make a Baby."

Pourquoi faire des clips ?

Shot Rings Out est l’un des blogs les plus pointus en termes de vidéos musicales. Dans un billet, il se pose la question de la raison d’être des clips à l’heure où il n’ont plus de fonction commerciale (en d’autres termes, depuis que MTV s’en fiche, ils ne rapportent que dalle).

"As the music industry changes around the internet I see music videos becoming less and less official. I won’t be surprised to see less label and band involvement. Music videos will be by music video fans for music video fans. Will these videos sometimes get co-opted by the band’s themselves resulting in a small bit a fame and even money for the producer ? Sure. But for the music video ecosystem to support itslelf in any real fashion there needs to be a dependable and fully accountable revenue stream. Youtube and music videos are going to evolve into the same thing : self-made and internet distributed. Nobody is really going to pay for music videos just like people don’t pay to look at paintings or photographs or videos of dramatic prairie dogs."

Montréal se porte bien

Le magazine américain Maisonneuve revient dans un long article sur Montréal, expliquant comment la ville a survécu à la vague Arcade Fire pour continuer à être bouillonnante de créativité sans se laisser réduire au cliché (comme a pu l’être Seattle au début des 90s). On y prend des nouvelles de Alden Penner, la moitié discrète des Unicorns...

"But now it’s four years later and the spotlight is still shining on the city. Montreal has moved beyond that first wave and has continued its quality output. One reason for this is that the artists responsible for the initial creative burst are releasing albums with their own bands and a multitude of side projects. This “six degrees of separation” has gone long way to extending the city’s reputation as a beacon for indie music. Starting at one band, you can chart a member’s collaboration to other albums and projects throughout the city and end up with a laundry list of excellent records."
